What are electroluminescent posters, and how do they work?

EL, or electroluminescent posters/signage, is a flat light bulb sandwich consisting of a conductive, non-conductive plastic and the phosphor layer. The phosphor is sandwiched between two conductive layers, and when a voltage is applied between them, it emits light.
